CBD Products and Injuries From Outdoor Winter Activities

Man Skiing On Hill outdoor winter activities

Contrary to popular belief, winter is the perfect time to get out of the house. Why keep yourself indoors all season long? Cabin fever can lead you to feel sick or sad. This magical season has its share of fun outdoor winter activities such as ice skating, snowboarding, skiing, and snowshoeing. But most people are too busy or too cold to go outside.

There are plenty of benefits to enjoying outdoor winter activities. Outdoor activities offer plenty of health benefits. Plus, you’ll feel good doing something that you love and burn calories. If you properly plan for any of these activities, you’ll reduce the impacts on your body. CBD has the potential to help you recover from any of these winter activities.

Why Should You Do Outdoor Winter Activities?

The cold can be a good thing for your body. According to Dain LaRoche, associate professor at the University of New Hampshire, people who spend more time in the cold experience an increased metabolism. Sometimes spending two hours in the cold air encourages you to burn more energy, as long as you’re doing it on a regular basis. It doesn’t have to be as strenuous as skiing though.

Taking a walk around the neighborhood or sledding with your children is just as effective. Not only will you enjoy the cardio benefits but staying outside in the cold will keep weight off in the wintertime. In addition, going outside and staying outside can help with the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). In the wintertime, the days are shorter, and the nights are longer, making people feel more depressed or tired than usual.

Even 30 minutes of sunlight can help improve your mood. According to the Endocrine Society, the brain releases adrenaline, epinephrine, or norepinephrine, which are known as the “feel-good” chemicals. And exercising outdoors allows your brain to produce more of these hormones, according to LaRoche. So, book that weekend trip to the ski lodge or try snowshoeing this Christmas. It could be the thing that cheers you up.

Ice Skating Injuries

While ice skating has its share of health benefits, it also causes a lot of wear and tear. Even though figure skaters look beautiful and graceful on the ice, the sport can be brutal on your body. Some of the most common injuries associated with ice skating are arthritic hips, chronic back pain, pulled hamstrings, and stressed fractures.

When it comes to injuries, ice skating is similar to ice hockey, according to Dr. Mark Adickes, medical director of Memorial Hermann’s Sports Medicine Institute. According to Rothman, ice skating injured 50,000 people in 2015. While skating is one of the most popular outdoor winter activities, it can also be very dangerous.

Snowboarding/Skiing Injuries

Skiing is one of the most dangerous outdoor winter activities. According to the National Ski Areas Association in the U.S., skiing has more reporting injuries than snowboarding. Most snowboarders suffer from ankle and head injuries, while skiers are more likely to be killed upon impact. Shoulder and wrist injuries are also common among snowboarders, while knee ligament injuries are common among skiers.

The reason why fewer snowboarders get hurt is that they’re younger, more likely to be female, and are newer to the sport.

Snowshoeing Injuries

In addition to winter hiking, snowshoeing has increased in popularity over the years. There has also been an increase in injuries as a result. According to a 2008 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hiking is the third most dangerous of outdoor winter activities, behind skiing and snowboarding. Hiking in the snow can lead to knee injuries.

In addition to injuries, regular snowshoeing can contribute to increased knee pain and discomfort. According to Manhattan Orthopedic Care, knee injuries aren’t just common to this sport. Other knee ailments can include:

  • Medial collateral ligament sprain
  • Medial meniscus tear
  • Medial Plica Syndrome
  • Popliteal cyst
  • Tendinitis of the patellar tendon or quadriceps tendon
